Piercing guide › Body piercings › Sternum
The sternum piercing is a surface piercing on the breastbone, usually vertical between the breasts or in the upper chest area.
I check how much skin can be lifted over the bone. The piercing is done with a needle; the channel lies flat under the skin.
A surface bar made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136.
Studios don't give consistent figures for the sternum piercing. Pain and healing correspond to surface piercings.
If there's hardly any skin over the bone, or a bra rubs directly over it, I say no.
With surface piercings, entry and exit lie on the same plane. The body can therefore push the jewellery out more easily. If the channel gets shorter or the jewellery shows through the skin, get in touch early.
How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version: sterile saline solution, don't twist, don't fiddle with it, be patient.
When to see a doctor
Pain and healing time are guide values, averaged from information given by piercing and tattoo studios. Where the figures come from. Everyone feels and heals differently.
