Surface piercing
at a glance

With a surface piercing, the entry and exit lie on the same flat area of skin. Typical spots are the nape, hip, sternum and collarbone.

How I
pierce it

I check how much skin can be lifted and how the spot behaves when you move. The piercing is done with a needle; the channel lies flat under the skin.

Jewellery

As initial jewellery I use a surface bar made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136. Its shape keeps the tension on the skin low.

Surface piercings grow out more often than other piercings. Whether a surface piercing stays permanently depends heavily on the spot, the jewellery and everyday life.

When I
say no

If the spot lies in a fold, under clothing or under tension, the risk of it growing out is high. Then I say no.

Healing
and care

With surface piercings, entry and exit lie on the same plane. The body can therefore push the jewellery out more easily. If the channel gets shorter or the jewellery shows through the skin, get in touch early.

How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version: sterile saline solution, don't twist, don't fiddle with it, be patient.

When to see a doctor

  • Redness and swelling keep increasing after the first few days.
  • Pus comes out, or you develop a fever.

Pain and healing time are guide values, averaged from information given by piercing and tattoo studios. Where the figures come from. Everyone feels and heals differently.
