Piercing guide › Face piercings › Septum
The septum piercing goes through the nasal septum, but not through the cartilage. It sits in the thin layer of tissue directly in front of it, at the bottom between the nostrils.
The right spot is narrow: if the channel is too high, it goes through cartilage; if it's too low, the jewellery hangs crooked. I feel for the point, mark it and check with you that the jewellery sits straight.
As initial jewellery I use a horseshoe made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136. It can be flipped up into the nose. The septum is one of the exceptions to my rule of not using a ring as initial jewellery: a straight bar doesn't make sense at this spot.
If the septum is badly deviated or the thin layer of tissue in front of the cartilage is missing, I'll tell you before the appointment.
How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version: sterile saline solution, don't twist, don't fiddle with it, be patient.
