Medusa (philtrum)
at a glance

The medusa sits in the centre above the upper lip, in the small groove under the nose. It goes into the mouth, with a flat disc on the inside.

How I
pierce it

The centre has to be exact, otherwise the face looks crooked. I mark, you check in the mirror, then I pierce.

Jewellery

As initial jewellery I use a bar with a flat disc on the inside, made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136. Once the swelling has gone down, I shorten it.

When I
say no

If the lip frenulum on the inside lies exactly on the spot, we rethink the position.

Typical mistakes

Healing
and care

Tissue in the mouth heals quickly because it has a good blood supply. In return it swells noticeably in the first few days. Rinse after eating with clear water or an alcohol-free mouthwash. Smoking and alcohol slow down healing.

How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version for the mouth: rinse after eating, don't play with the jewellery, have the initial bar shortened in time.

When to get help immediately

  • Tongue or lip swell so much that swallowing or breathing becomes difficult: call the emergency number 112.
  • Redness and swelling keep increasing after the first few days.
  • Pus comes out, or you develop a fever.

Pain and healing time are guide values, averaged from information given by piercing and tattoo studios. Where the figures come from. Everyone feels and heals differently.
