Piercing guide › Face piercings › Labret
The labret sits in the centre below the lower lip. It goes from the outside into the mouth, with a flat disc on the inside.
I check from the inside where the disc will sit later, so that it doesn't press directly on the gums. Then I mark the outside and pierce after your confirmation.
As initial jewellery I use a bar with a flat disc on the inside, made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136. It's longer at first. Once the swelling has gone down, I shorten it.
If the labret sits to the side below the lip, it's called a side labret. The same applies to care and healing.
If the gums at the spot have receded significantly, I advise against it.
Tissue in the mouth heals quickly because it has a good blood supply. In return it swells noticeably in the first few days. Rinse after eating with clear water or an alcohol-free mouthwash. Smoking and alcohol slow down healing.
How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version for the mouth: rinse after eating, don't play with the jewellery, have the initial bar shortened in time.
