Piercing guide › Body piercings › Nipple
The nipple piercing usually goes horizontally through the base of the nipple, directly in front of the areola. Vertical is also possible.
I mark the entry and exit so that the bar lies straight at the base and sits at the same height on both sides. The piercing is done with a needle.
As initial jewellery I use a straight bar made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136. Rings only once healing is complete.
The jewellery has to come out for breastfeeding. If you want to breastfeed, discuss it with your midwife or doctor.
I don't pierce during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If the nipple is very flat, we discuss beforehand whether the jewellery will sit stably.
How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version: sterile saline solution, don't twist, don't fiddle with it, be patient.
When to see a doctor
