Piercing guide › Ear piercings › Upper lobe
The upper lobe sits in the upper part of the earlobe, just below the transition to the cartilage. The tissue there is still soft, but a little firmer than at the bottom of the earlobe.
I check where the soft tissue ends and the cartilage begins and place the point so that it stays safely in the earlobe. If there are already holes, I measure the spacing so that the row looks even. The piercing is done with a needle.
As initial jewellery I use a stud made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136. Rings only become an option from week eight at the earliest, never as initial jewellery.
If the earlobe is small, there is hardly any room at the top between the lower hole and the cartilage. Then I'd rather not place another hole than one that sits too close.
How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version: sterile saline solution, don't twist, don't fiddle with it, be patient.
