Daith piercing
at a glance

The daith sits in the innermost cartilage fold of the ear, at the root of the rim, directly above the entrance to the ear canal.

How I
pierce it

The spot is tight and the angle demanding. I mark the entry and exit points, you confirm, then I pierce with a needle.

Jewellery

With me the initial jewellery isn't a ring. I use jewellery made of Bioplast or titanium to ASTM F136; rings only once healing is complete, at the earliest after six months.

Online, the daith is often called the “migraine piercing” and linked to migraine. Whether it has any effect is still an open question. That is exactly the question investigated by the study at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, in which I took part as the piercer. What is known about it can be found on the Effectiveness page. I pierce the daith as a piercing — cleanly and so that it suits your ear.

When I
say no

The fold has to be pronounced enough for the channel to sit stably. If it isn't, I'll tell you.

Typical mistakes

Healing
and care

Cartilage has hardly any blood supply. That's why every cartilage piercing heals much more slowly than the earlobe, even if it looks calm from the outside earlier.

How to care for the piercing in each phase is explained in detail on the Care and aftercare page. The short version: sterile saline solution, don't twist, don't fiddle with it, be patient.

When to see a doctor immediately

  • The redness spreads beyond the piercing site.
  • The ear becomes hot, swells and hurts more and more.
  • Pus comes out, or you develop a fever.

An inflammation of the cartilage is serious and can permanently deform the ear. Don't wait.

Pain and healing time are guide values, averaged from information given by piercing and tattoo studios. Where the figures come from. Everyone feels and heals differently.
